About
Nowadays, yoga is a practice recognised for its postures (asanas) that involve muscular strength, flexibility, balance and conscious breathing.
But more than that, yoga is a complete ancient practice that unites body, mind and soul.
If you wish, yoga can also be a philosophy, but that depends very much on how far you want to go with defining this concept of exercises developed over at least 5000 years.
Besides burning calories, yoga is a practice that helps you develop a strong and flexible body in conjunction with a calm, quiet, educated, resilient and patient mind.
Yogis (male practitioners) and yoginis (female practitioners) have long observed that moving the body in a conscious way, where there is a balance between effort and relaxation, leads to a calmer, clearer mind and, consequently, a better meditative practice. For this reason, a yoga practice often includes a meditation part at the end of the session.
Experience
The experience is not a necessity to perform on the mat, nor is your physical ability. We all start somewhere and the most important aspects are: doing this for yourself, not comparing yourself to anyone else in the gym and enjoying the journey you have within your body.
It's also very important not to feel any great pain and discomfort during any asana.
If you feel like getting out of position, just do it, listen to your body.
