About
HAWAIIAN ORANGE BLOSSOM RITUAL
" Revive, Transform, and Heal with the Hawaiian Lomi Lomi Massage " Lomilomi is an ancient Hawaiian healing system, one component of which is the art of compassionate touch. Lomilomi goes far beyond massage, however; it also reflects our connection to the earth ('aina), spirit guides or ancestors ('aumakua), and the breath of life (aloha). Lomilomi, sometimes called Hawaiian massage, is beneficial for many ailments and to increase spiritual energy and personal power (mana). Feeding movements are relaxing; however, one soon learns that this work is therapeutic on all levels. Lomilomi kumu (master) Brenda Ignacio of Oahu, Hawaii, describes lomilomi as a distinctly Hawaiian healing art form, which is passed down through generations by master practitioners. She says the basis of this spiritual work is "the embodiment of reverence for life, wisdom, knowledge and compassion." Lomi lomi is a traditional Hawaiian massage that uses a combination of massage techniques, nut oils and sometimes elements of prayer, breathing and dance to restore energy and calm the body. It is also known as "loving hands" massage. This name helps to explain its principles - the massage works gently but deeply into the muscles with continuous and fluid movements, allowing the recipient to relax and surrender to the nourishing touch. Lomi lomi works from the belief that memories are not only stored in the brain and mind, but in every cell of the human body. The long, continuous movements of the massage are designed to help the body let go of old patterns and behaviors, which can cause just as much stress and tension as muscle tension. Hawaiian Lomi Lomi "Lomi lomi" translates to "rub" in Hawaiian and reflects the broad, fluid movements made with the therapist's fingers, thumbs, palms, arms and elbows. Macadamia, palm and coconut oils are commonly used as moisturizers in lomi lomi massage to maintain smooth movements and nourish the skin. Many believe that the healing art of lomi lomi was brought to Hawaii by early Polynesian settlers, while others believe it is deeply infused with the practice of "aloha living"—a carryover from ancient Hawaii and the mystical land of Mu. Hawaiian lomi lomi massage can also be referred to as Kahuna bodywork.
